Different Types of Dentures

You are probably familiar with the two broad categories of dentures: full sets for people who are missing all their teeth, and partial sets for those who are just missing a few teeth. But you may not know that there are two types of complete sets of dentures — conventional and immediate. Here are the differences between the two:
  • Conventional dentures: Patients who have already lost their teeth or who have previously had them extracted are fitted with conventional dentures – in other words, they have dentures fitted onto fully healed gums.
  • Immediate dentures: Patients who need to have their teeth extracted have another option, which is a set of immediate dentures. These appliances are fitted on the patient immediately after extraction takes place. The advantage is that the patient doesn’t have to wait until the gum tissue heals to have their teeth replaced. The downside with immediate dentures is that the appliances will need to be relined as the gum tissue heals and changes shape.

Getting a new set of dentures isn’t just about the appliance itself. A successful experience for the patient also depends on the skills and expertise of the dentist fitting the dentures. Dr. Mobley takes the time to ensure that every new set of dentures is as comfortable and natural-feeling as possible for the patient.
