Dental technology has come so far in the past few years. And thanks to the more advanced materials now available, your dentist can perform restorations on your teeth that are almost entirely undetectable to other people. One great example of this are tooth-colored fillings. Dr. Mobley wants each and every one of her patients from throughout the Austin, TX area to enjoy all the benefits of a beautiful smile, which is why she is happy to offer tooth-colored fillings as one of her many services.
What You Should Know about Tooth-Colored Fillings
Thanks to the advent of dental composite material, Dr. Mobley is able to fill even the largest of cavities with this tooth-colored material. The obvious benefit is that the color very closely matches the shade of your natural teeth, which means that no one will even realize that you have a filling! But the composite material offers other advantages as well. Unlike the old silver amalgam filling material – which was not only visible when first applied, but also had a tendency to darken to an almost-black color over a period of years – the new composite material does not change color. And the material, which is typically made from a mixture of plastic resin and silica filler, is remarkably durable and long-lasting.
What’s Involved in Getting a Filling
Although the type of material used for tooth-colored fillings is quite different from the old silver amalgam material, the procedure involved in getting a new filling has not changed – at least not from the patient’s point of view. Dr. Mobley begins by removing existing decay (and/or old filling material, if the new filling is replacing an existing one), after which she thoroughly cleans the surface of the tooth. Finally, Dr. Mobley fills the tooth using a composite material that closely matches the color of the patient’s natural teeth.
